RIAU

Riau holds some of Sumatra's last intact lowland forests, mangrove corridors and peatlands that took centuries to form, and Hutan.in's presence here runs through local networks already rooted in these communities.
Why Riau?
Riau holds some of Sumatra's last intact lowland forests: mangrove corridors and peatlands that took centuries to form. Hutan.in maintains a partnership presence here, working through local networks and In.Allies who are already rooted in these communities.
Our work in Riau is not a standalone field program. It runs through partner organizations and In.Allies volunteers. What we bring is ecological knowledge, a shared framework, and the connection to Hutan.in's broader network of practice.
Mangrove restoration along riverbanks protects against tidal flooding and sustains the freshwater fish breeding grounds livelihoods depend on. Environmental education connects local youth to these ecosystems before they disappear from view.
What We Do Here
In.Conserve · via local partners
Riau holds some of Sumatra's last intact lowland forest corridors. Through local partner networks, mangrove planting focuses on the river swamp zones of Pekanbaru, critical nurseries for freshwater fish and the first line of defense against tidal flooding for the communities who live along these riverbanks.
What We Support
River Swamp Restoration. Targeting the riverbank zones where mangroves matter most for flood protection.
Community-Selected Sites. Every planting site chosen with and by the communities who live there.
Freshwater Fish Nurseries. Protecting the breeding grounds local livelihoods depend on.
In.Waste · Educate.In · via local partners
Waste in riverbank communities flows directly into the waterways that mangroves depend on. Through partner organizations and In.Allies networks already rooted in these communities, we build sorting habits and connect local youth to the ecosystems that are their immediate ecological inheritance.
What We Support
Community-Led Waste Practices. Built from within riverbank communities, accompanied over time.
Youth Environmental Education. Connecting young people directly to the mangroves, peatlands, and rivers around them.
Shared Framework, Local Delivery. Hutan.in's ecological knowledge, carried out through partners already present.
