SELAMAT.IN is a long-term framework for human-wildlife coexistence in East Kalimantan, built on field presence, community authority, and the conviction that conflict between people and wildlife is not inevitable.
We say this directly: SELAMAT.IN is under active development. Initial field and community assessments are complete across a cluster of buffer-zone communities. Working relationships with government conservation and wildlife authorities are being established. No formal coordination agreements are finalized. No permanent rescue facilities exist. What we have built is real field presence, documented community need, and a framework grounded in what we have seen.
Why SELAMAT.IN?
The Framework
SELAMAT.IN integrates six components that address conflict, care, habitat, monitoring, education, and partnership. In human-wildlife coexistence, single-component approaches consistently fail. Each component is necessary. None is sufficient alone, and each sits at its own stage of readiness.
Co-Creation Phase
Participatory dialogue with local communities, conflict mitigation education, and development of a Youth Ranger concept that empowers young people as conservation leaders.
Current Focus
Social Mapping. Understanding where and how conflict happens before designing a response.
Relationship Building. The slow groundwork that makes everything else possible.
Co-Creation of Learning Materials. Built with communities, not delivered to them.
SOP Development
Establishing a Quick Reaction Rescue Team of trained wildlife responders, veterinary professionals, and community liaisons, built on IUCN best practices.
Current Focus
SOP Development. Standard procedures before any deployment.
Stakeholder Mapping. Identifying who needs to be at the table.
Pilot Preparation. With experienced partners, not alone.
Conceptual & Design Phase · Not Operational
Designing facilities for immediate intake, health screening, and short-term rehabilitation of rescued wildlife before release or longer-term care. Subject to partnerships, resources, and regulatory processes.
Current Focus
Facility Design. Conceptual planning before any construction.
Regulatory Pathway. Understanding what permits and approvals are needed.
Partnership Dependent. Will not move forward without the right partner.
Active Development · with In.Conserve
Climate-resilient reforestation prioritizing fast-growing wildlife food species, enhancing habitat quality and ecological connectivity, reducing pressure on human landscapes by restoring wildlife corridors.
Current Focus
Food-Source Species Planting. The same corridor restoration In.Conserve runs in East Kalimantan.
Community Nurseries. Seed collection, nursery management, and planting led locally.
Digital Monitoring. Tracking what's planted and how it grows.
Ongoing
Building durable partnerships across government institutions, NGOs, academia, communities, and the private sector, advocating to integrate SELAMAT.IN's coexistence model into broader sustainability and development agendas.

Where We Are Now
The foundation is built. The response capacity is being built. Each component above sits somewhere on this board, and we are transparent about where. What we are not willing to do is deploy a half-built system and call it a program.

Partnership initiation and co-design, ethical framework and SOP development, baseline ecological and social-ecological assessments, identification of pilot locations.
Pilot Implementation
Pilot community education and Youth Ranger activities, limited pilot responses to human-wildlife conflict, trial habitat restoration interventions, smart monitoring and adaptive learning.
Scale-Up & Institutionalization
Expansion of conflict mitigation mechanisms, development and operationalization of facilities, scaling habitat restoration and connectivity, integration into broader conservation networks and policies.

The Ask
SELAMAT.IN is not a single-cycle project. Building it responsibly means building the foundations first, the community relationships, the response systems, the facilities, the monitoring infrastructure, and the partnerships that make it replicable beyond this one landscape. We invite NGOs, institutions, and funding partners to engage as co-builders.
