Research Officer — Anoa Study

We are seeking a Research Officer to support our biodiversity surveys and camera trap network for the lowland anoa study in Kolaka.

Overview

Hutanin Ekosistem Indonesia is a conservation foundation working across Indonesia. Our research pillar focuses on participatory, ethical science to understand and protect endangered species like the lowland anoa.

Program Overview

Our research program in Southeast Sulawesi monitors anoa populations and maps their habitat in collaboration with local communities and forestry authorities.

  • Field monitoring: setting up and maintaining a camera trap network in forest corridors.
  • Community mapping: interviewing local villagers about wildlife sightings and habitat quality.

About the Role

The Research Officer is based in Kolaka and leads field surveys, coordinates baseline data collection, and manages community research relations. It involves extensive travel into forest terrain and rugged environments.

Responsibilities

The Research Officer coordinates field data collections, maintains survey equipment, and ensures accurate data processing.

Field Surveys and Monitoring

  • Deploying and servicing camera traps in designated forest zones.
  • Conducting vegetation transects and recording wildlife spoor/signs.

Data Management

  • Cataloging camera trap imagery and metadata.
  • Writing survey reports and drafting scientific summaries.

Qualifications

  • Based in or willing to relocate to Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi.
  • Degree in Biology, Forestry, Environmental Science, or equivalent field experience.
  • Comfortable with camping and hiking in remote forest environments for several days.
  • Experience with camera trapping, GPS mapping, or wildlife tracking is highly preferred.

Additional Information

Hutanin values field experience and local ecological knowledge as much as formal academic training.
